Why do I need SPF in my skincare?
Excellent question, we’re so glad you asked. SPF is such a crucial part of your everyday skincare routine, and without it, you’re essentially rendering all of your other skincare products useless.
SPF is the most consistently useful thing you can do for your skin to keep it healthy. The sun’s UV rays are the number one cause of skin ageing; fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots and a dull complexion. Even the best skincare products are limited in their ability to repair the damage that unprotected sun exposure causes. Above all, UV rays damage the skin’s DNA so that it can no longer properly control skin cell growth, which can also cause skin cancer.
Rather than waiting until the damage is done to take action, it’s time to treat your skin to the protection that it deserves. Here’s what you need to know when it comes to protecting your skin from the sun.
Not all SPFs are created equally…
There are two different types of UV rays that are emitted from the sun and which can cause damage to the skin, UVA and UVB rays. Many of us would assume that an SPF protects against both types of harmful rays, but that is not the case.
UVB rays are what cause the skin to burn. The SPF rating indicates how long it will take the UVB to redden the skin. For example, SPF 30 means it would take 30 times longer for the skin to burn than it would without using the product. UVA rays are completely cast aside from this equation. But they shouldn’t be. UVA rays don’t cause the skin to burn, but they do cause the skin to tan. As UVA rays penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, they also cause the cells to age prematurely and develop abnormalities that result in skin cancer.
So instead of only protecting your skin against one type of harmful UV radiation, make sure your SPF is labelled “broad spectrum”. These two words verify that your day cream or moisturiser contains a combination of ingredients that protect skin against both types of UV radiation.
If you want to ensure that you’re doubly protected from all things UV (which you should), keep your eyes peeled for the PA rating. The PA rating system ranges from PA + to PA ++++ and was developed to represent how much UVA protection a product offers.
Come rain or shine, wear your SPF all the time
Regardless of the weather, UV rays are ever-present. Your SPF should be the last step of your skincare routine in the morning, as essential to your daily routine as picking up your keys before leaving the house.
We recommend applying a teaspoon-sized amount of your SPF on application. If you’re spending the whole day in the sunshine, doing any activities that will cause you to sweat or if you’re going swimming, you should re-apply your SPF regularly throughout the day.
